Someone once asked me, does blogging support SEO and can it be used to drive in more traffic?  My answer was simple:  yes...uh, no...well,  maybe...  Blogs are a great way to create buzz around a product or service.  Done the right way, a blog will attrct significant traffic to your site.  Here’s some info on blogs:

  • The good news:  you can set up a blog in minutes.
  • The bad news:  you can set up a blog in minutes. (80% of blogs are abandoned within a month)
  • Classic mistakes:
    • No author/brand identification
    • Underestimating time commitment (you must write a solid entry at least 3 times per week)
    • Overestimating marketing impact
    • Haphazard content
    • Writing for search engines instead of target market
    • Irregular/Infrequent updating
    • Not scannable
    • Not distinguished from a website
  • You can leverage blogs this way:
    • Get listed and linked from others’ blogs
    • Link your blog to your site
    • When linking to your site, use anchor text (Keywords around the link) for better SEO
    • Use compelling calls to action to get people to act
    • Use blogs appropriately
    • Develop meaningful content
    • Focus on converting more readers
    • Tie back to objectives and target markets
    • Viral (word of mouth)
